Career coaching provides the perfect opportunity to encourage clients to take a pause from their busy lives to reflect upon and share rewarding past work/life-related experiences. Reflection allows space to untangle a diverse set of experiences and emotions to reveal meaningful insights for future decision-making.

Asking clients to dig into a few positive experiences in which they outline the circumstance preceding the experience, the actions and skills they performed, and the enjoyment they received, results in two tangible benefits:

• They connect the dots between using their preferred skills, the impact they made, and the feelings of personal satisfaction achieved. This first step immediately boosts their personal clarity and confidence.
• As the client verbally expands on these experiences, the coach may observe repeating themes across the various experiences and notice the client’s non-verbal behavior to reinforce and validate the importance of their preferred skills.

Then, when clients compare the insights they gained from reflection to the top skills displayed on their SkillScan report, their skill preferences are cross validated and they acquire descriptive language to communicate their strengths.
